Job description
store manager (or retail manager) is the strategic and operational leader responsible for the end-to-end management of a retail location. Often referred to as the “mini-CEO” of the store, they balance staff leadership, financial performance, and customer satisfaction to ensure profitability and brand consistency.
Core Responsibilities
Operations & Administration: Manage daily opening and closing procedures, secure assets, reconcile cash registers, and coordinate with vendors for deliveries and maintenance.
Team Leadership: Recruit, hire, train, and mentor staff. They create employee schedules, conduct performance reviews, and manage conflict resolution to maintain a positive work environment.
Sales & Financial Management: Set and achieve sales targets, monitor KPIs (like conversion rates and average transaction value), manage budgets, and analyze profit and loss (P&L) statements.
Inventory Control: Oversee stock levels, conduct regular audits to prevent shrinkage (theft/loss), and use data to forecast demand and order new products.
Customer Experience: Ensure high service standards by personally resolving escalations and training the team to deliver exceptional shopping experiences.
Visual Merchandising: Maintain store appearance according to brand guidelines, including window displays, floor sets, and promotional signage.
Compliance & Safety: Enforce health and safety regulations, local labour laws, and corporate security policies.
Requirements
Experience: Typically requires 2–5 years of retail experience, with at least 1–2 years in a supervisory or management role.
Education: A high school diploma is standard; however, many employers prefer a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Retail Management, or a related field.
Flexibility: Must be willing to work long hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
